But SCA is the mightiest of causes with which Gomes has chosen to align
himself. Last year he partnered with Cardiac Science and the
organization Parent Heart Watch to distribute 12 defibrillators to
community centers and schools in NBA cities. The goal is to hit the
remaining 18 NBA stops next season.

More than a third of the 318 D-I coaches, some big-timers, too, have reacted favorably to Gomes’ request that they lend their names to his cause. Gomes pulled out a list that included UConn’s Jim Calhoun, Florida’s Billy Donovan, UCLA’s Ben Howland, Villanova’s Jay Wright, Alabama’s Mark Gottfried, Memphis’ John Calipari, Pitt’s Jamie Dixon, George Washington’s Karl Hobbs and Rhode Island’s Jim Baron.

is to keep all three of them," Johnson said. "We’re really happy with
what they’ve been able to do to develop our broadcasts."

Former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey was at the Berto Center

There are more than two future All-Stars in the
upcoming draft, and it’s up to the Wolves’ hierarchy to identify those
players, which doesn’t give the team’s fans much hope.

Guard O.J. Mayo has undeniable talent but seems to
have a splash of J.R. Rider to him. Seven-footer Brook Lopez is the
best center in the draft, but the Wolves’ history of taking post
players — Felton Spencer, Luc Longley, Paul Grant, Rasho Nesterovic —
is alarming. Kevin Love has power-forward size with a center’s game.
