The Minnesota Timberwolves announced the team has acquired guard Antonio Daniels and a future second-round draft pick from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for guard Bobby Brown and forward Darius Songaila.

“Antonio has the ability to play both guard positions and will provide a veteran presence and added flexibility to our backcourt,” said David Kahn, Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations. “This trade also provides increased flexibility for personnel moves beginning next summer.”

Financial implications of today’s trade? Wolves shed $4.8M owed to Songaila in 2010-11, giving them estimated $13M in cap space in 2010

From Ray Richardson/Pioneer Press:

Brown and Songaila had short stays with the Wolves. Brown appeared in only 21 games last season after coming to the Wolves from Sacramento in a trade on Feb. 19. He averaged 5.5 points and 1.4 assists. Songaila, acquired from Washington on June 24, appeared in 77 games last season with the Wizards and averaged 7.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 19.8 minutes per game.
The Timberwolves take on a little more salary this season, but get out from under Songaila’s player option for next year, which will cost about $4.8 million.

“Antonio has the ability to play both guard positions and will provide a veteran presence and added flexibility to our backcourt,” said David Kahn, the Timberwolves’ president of basketball operations. “This trade also provides increased flexibility for personnel moves beginning next summer.”

So, was the Mike Miller and Randy Foye trade really all about the Minnesota Timberwolves getting Oleksiy Pecherov? Pecherov is now the only player remaining from the original trade Minnesota made with Washington two days prior to the NBA draft. The Timberwolves dealt Darius Songaila and Bobby Brown to New Orleans for another former Wizard, Antonio Daniels, on Wednesday .
