Mike Miller, the Mitchell, S.D., native who came to the Timberwolves in Thursday’s draft-day deal with the Memphis Grizzles, is thrilled with the trade.

"Absolutely it’s a coming- home party," Miller said. "It gives me a
chance to come here, and hopefully I’ll have an opportunity here to
finish out my career. To be a part of the Timberwolves, a team I always
watched growing up and always wanted to be a part of, and now I’ve got
that opportunity. So hopefully I’ll finish my career here."

Q. Have you talked to Kevin McHale or anyone with the team yet? What have they told you about your role?

A. I talked to him a little bit the night of the draft. We had just
a briefing. I will be out there Monday night and Tuesday for a physical
and press conference.

Q. Three-point shooting has been something the Timberwolves have
struggled with. How do you feel about your opportunity to improve on
that?

A. I hope I can help them. That is one of the reasons they went out and
got me. Not only just making and shooting more 3s and making the game
easier for the other guys, but giving Al Jefferson (more room in the
center) and the opportunity to open the floor up for Randy Foye and
give Kevin Love the opportunity to do what he does. When you get
(3-point opportunities), it opens up the court up for other players.

Despite being just 28 years old, Miller is already one of the most
experience players on the Timberwolves roster. And as such, he’s ready
to step into his clearly-defined role on the team.

"A veteran leader. Someone that’s been around 9 years, has been a part
of some really good, winning, teams. And someone that’s seen the
disappointment of losing. I think I can teach on both ends, and I
understand the importance of what we need to do to win games," says
Miller. "And also spread the floor, and make things easier for these
young guys that are trying to make their mark in the NBA as true
basketball players."

Miller’s first season in Minnesota will be his 9th in the NBA. And
while the Wolves are coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise
history, the former 6th Man Of The Year says the team’s potential is
evident.

"We’re actually really close. The only unfortunate thing is the West
will be tough. Everyone knows how tough the West is from top to bottom.
But we’re close," explains Miller. "I think we have an exciting team
that really could make a playoff run. And if not this year, then next."
