Flynn, with the Wolves playing just their third game and their first since Monday after three full days of practice,  showed why he was selected sixth overall in last month’s draft, and immediately after the Wolves already took another point guard, Ricky Rubio.

Flynn scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, had five assists, three turnovers and impressed with his ability to get to the rim almost any time he wanted with an assortment of power stop-and-start moves with his dribble.

He made a gorgeous, long bounce pass to Garrett Siler for a lay-in earlier in the game, then delivered a startling no-look pass later that went right through a surprised Rob Kurz’s hands.

From Jonah Ballow/Timberwolves site:
“The biggest thing about this game was we came out with the mind set with we wanted to win the game,” Flynn said. “That is the key to Summer League to get exposure for guys but we still want to win games, so it feels good to get this win out here.”

While Flynn waited for his time on the bench, Minnesota jumped out to a 27-16 lead in the first quarter. Bobby Brown earned the starting spot next to former UNC shooting guard Wayne Ellington. In 20 minutes of court time, Ellington recorded 19 points after posting 22 against the NBA D-League Select team on Monday afternoon.

“I think we are getting accustomed to each other as a team,” Ellington said. “Early it’s hard to play well as a team and your first two games, so I think we are just getting better as a team, that’s all.”

Two unlikely suspects came to the rescue for Minnesota with timely 3-point shooting. Oleksiy Pecherov and Devin Green nailed crucial long bombs to provide the necessary cushion and eventual victory for the Wolves. Pecherov finished 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting while snagging eight rebounds in the victory.

Jonny Flynn didn’t start on Friday, but he took sole ownership of the game when he checked in at the start of the second quarter. Time and again, Flynn would get a hard screen from one of his bigs (both Garrett Siler and Adam Parada did good work), then exploded through the middle into daylight, absorbing any and all contact. In the fourth quarter, Flynn unleashed the theatrics: a behind-the-back pass to Parada, a two-handed dish over his head backward to a waiting shooter, a kickout to the arc while he was airborne in traffic. He finished with 21 points on 7-of-11 from the floor, and a perfect 7-for-7 from the stripe.
From the Niagara Gazette:
The Niagara Falls native was efficient in the process, shooting 7 for 11 from the floor, and 7 for 7 from the free throw line.

Flynn, who got into the lane whenever he pleased in his first summer game following three days of practice, also dished out five assists, but it was the shots he created for himself that had the NBA.com commentators comparing him to former All-Star Rod Strickland.

Flynn came off the bench to score 16 points on just six field goal attempts in the first half.

Fellow first-round pick Wayne Ellington complemented Flynn with a 19-point game on 6-for-14 shooting.
